What is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)? A practical guide

The Orchestra Team · August 19, 2026 · 6 min read

Generative Engine Optimization, usually shortened to GEO, describes the process of improving how a business, brand or website appears in AI-generated answers.

For years, digital visibility largely meant ranking on Google. Today a customer might instead ask an assistant "what are the best marketing platforms for a small business?" or "which hotels would you recommend on Elba?" — and the answer arrives as a recommendation rather than a list of results.

That creates a new marketing question: does the AI know your business exists, and does it consider your business relevant enough to mention? That is the question GEO tries to answer.

GEO doesn't replace SEO

Despite the new terminology, GEO should not be treated as a replacement for SEO.

Google's own position is blunter than most GEO marketing admits. Its guide to optimizing for generative AI features says: "From Google Search's perspective, optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO." Its generative features retrieve from the Search index and rely on the core ranking systems.

So the relationship is better understood like this:

  • SEO helps search systems discover, understand and rank your content.
  • GEO considers whether that information ultimately becomes part of an AI-generated answer.

The foundations overlap heavily. What changes is what you measure — see GEO vs SEO for where the two actually diverge.

Why GEO has become important

Traditional search typically gives users a choice of webpages. Generative search goes further: it can retrieve information from multiple sources, compare it, summarize it and generate a single answer.

Google describes using retrieval-augmented generation — a technique "used to improve the quality, accuracy, and freshness of AI responses by relying on our core Search ranking systems to retrieve relevant, up-to-date web pages" — along with query fan-out, where related searches are generated to gather what's needed to answer the original question.

Consider "what is the best AI marketing platform for an independent hotel?" Behind that one question, the system might investigate hotel marketing, social media automation, AI content creation, advertising, SEO and small-business marketing.

Your visibility isn't determined by optimizing for one exact phrase. The system needs enough information to understand what you do, where you are relevant and why your information is useful.

What can influence GEO visibility?

There isn't a universal GEO algorithm, but several fundamentals matter.

1. Crawlability

AI-powered search cannot reliably use information it cannot access. Google requires pages to meet normal Search technical requirements to be eligible for its generative AI features. For ChatGPT search, OpenAI's crawler documentation says OAI-SearchBot is what surfaces websites in ChatGPT's search features — block it and you won't appear there.

2. Clear positioning

Your website should make the basics obvious: who you are, what you sell, whom you serve, which problems you solve, where you operate, and what differentiates you. A vague website makes both customer and machine understanding harder.

3. Topical authority

One generic landing page rarely establishes deep expertise. A business should create useful content around the topics it genuinely knows. For Orchestra, AI visibility naturally connects with SEO, GEO, content marketing, social marketing, advertising and marketing automation. Over time those connections create a much clearer picture of the business.

4. Original information

Google's AI-search guidance asks for content with a unique point of view — firsthand experience rather than summaries of information already available online. That is an opportunity: publish the things only you can credibly publish. Your own data, customer insights, original analyses, case studies, experiments and industry observations.

5. Evidence

Statements supported by examples and data are more useful than unsupported marketing claims. Microsoft's guidance for AI answers makes the same point: "examples, data, and cited sources help build trust when content is reused."

How do you measure GEO?

This is where GEO begins to diverge from conventional SEO reporting. Instead of looking only at rankings and clicks, you can ask:

  • Does AI mention our brand?
  • Which questions cause us to appear?
  • Is our website referenced?
  • Which competitors appear instead?
  • Are we visible across the topics that matter commercially?
  • Is that visibility improving?

There is growing validation for this type of measurement. Bing Webmaster Tools now reports AI citations, cited pages, grounding query phrases and citation trends across supported Microsoft AI experiences. Google has introduced dedicated Search Console reporting showing impressions and pages appearing within generative AI features such as AI Overviews and AI Mode, rolled out initially to a subset of websites.

How to measure AI visibility goes through the full metric set.

How Orchestra approaches GEO

Orchestra applies this idea at the business level. Its GEO audit tests representative AI discovery prompts and examines brand mentions, domain references, competitor mentions, prompt coverage, an overall GEO visibility score, and recommended actions.

The purpose isn't to promise a mythical "number-one AI ranking" — no universal AI ranking exists. The objective is much more practical: understand whether your business appears when potential customers ask AI about your market, and what to improve when it doesn't.

GEO is ultimately about being understood

The most sustainable GEO strategy isn't manipulating an AI system. It's making your business easier to discover, understand, trust, reference and recommend.

SEO remains the foundation. GEO gives businesses another way of measuring whether those efforts are translating into visibility inside the new generation of search experiences.
