AI Visibility

How to measure your brand’s AI visibility

Suppose your Google rankings are improving, your organic traffic is stable and your domain authority looks healthy — but when customers ask AI assistants about your market, your company rarely appears.

Traditional SEO dashboards might never reveal that problem. AI visibility requires an additional measurement layer.

1. Brand mention rate

Start with the simplest metric: how frequently is your brand mentioned across relevant AI discovery prompts? If you test 20 relevant questions and appear in five, your mention rate is 25%.

Don't treat that as an absolute ranking. Treat it as a repeatable benchmark — run comparable prompts later and see whether visibility changes.

2. Prompt coverage

Not every prompt has equal commercial importance. A software company may appear for "what is Company X?" but not for "best software for automating a small-business marketing campaign." The second is commercially far more interesting.

Divide prompts into themes — category, problems, use cases, alternatives, comparisons, local discovery, buying decisions — then measure where the brand is strong and weak.

3. Domain references and citations

A brand mention and a domain citation aren't the same thing. Your company might be recommended while another website is used as the source. Or your website might be cited for information without the brand being strongly recommended. Track both.

Microsoft now exposes citation counts, cited pages and grounding query phrases through Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance reporting, which shows citation activity is becoming a genuine performance metric rather than a curiosity.

4. Competitor share

AI visibility is inherently competitive. If you don't appear, who does?

Suppose 30 discovery prompts produce: Competitor A, 20 mentions; Competitor B, 15; your brand, 7; Competitor C, 5. Now you have something actionable. Investigate why A dominates — what topics they cover, how they're positioned, where they're referenced, what evidence exists about them.

Competitive visibility is often more revealing than your own score in isolation, which is why why AI recommends your competitors is worth reading alongside this.

5. Topic visibility

Ask what AI associates you with. A marketing platform might be visible for social media automation but absent for AI marketing strategy, even though both matter commercially.

Map visibility by subject. This identifies content gaps and positioning gaps.

6. Visibility over time

One audit is a snapshot; repeated measurement creates intelligence. Track baseline → optimization → re-test.

The platforms are moving the same direction. Bing's AI Performance dashboard includes citation trends over time, and Google now provides generative AI performance reports in Search Console covering impressions, pages, countries, devices and dates for its generative AI experiences.

One caveat worth knowing before you build a report around it: that Search Console data covers impressions, not clicks. It tells you that you were surfaced, not that anyone came.

7. AI referral traffic

AI discovery can also generate website visits. For ChatGPT search referrals, OpenAI's publisher FAQ notes that referral URLs automatically contain utm_source=chatgpt.com.

Track sessions, engaged sessions, conversions, revenue and content viewed — but don't equate AI traffic with AI visibility. A customer may see your brand and never click.

A practical AI visibility dashboard

| Metric | What it tells you | | --- | --- | | Mention rate | How often you're named | | Prompt coverage | Which questions you appear for | | Citation rate | Whether your content is referenced | | Competitor share | Who wins when you don't | | Topic visibility | Which subjects you're associated with | | Referral traffic | Whether AI sends visits | | Conversions | Whether those visits matter | | Trend | Whether visibility is improving |

What about an AI visibility score?

A consolidated score is useful, but it needs context. There is no official universal "ChatGPT ranking" or "GEO score." An AI visibility score is best treated as a measurement framework, not a search-engine metric.

Orchestra's GEO Score serves exactly that purpose: simplifying multiple visibility signals into a benchmark you can monitor, while still exposing the underlying information.

Measure before creating more content

Don't immediately publish 100 new "AI-optimized" pages. First identify the problem. You might discover that AI already finds you; that your website is referenced but your brand isn't; that one competitor dominates one specific topic; that your positioning is unclear; or that you have good broad visibility but weak commercial visibility.

Each of those requires a different response.

From measurement to action

The goal isn't collecting another marketing score. It's creating a loop: ask → measure → understand → improve → test again. That's how AI visibility becomes operational rather than theoretical.
