AI Visibility
AI visibility metrics: what should businesses actually measure?

Marketing dashboards were built around clicks. Search gave us a tidy sequence: rankings → impressions → clicks → sessions → conversions.
AI-generated discovery doesn't always follow that sequence. A user asks "which tools should I use to automate my marketing?" and your business appears directly inside the answer. You received visibility. There may be no click.
So what should businesses measure? Five core metrics make a useful starting framework.
Metric 1: Mention share
How frequently does your brand appear in relevant AI answers?
Monitor 100 representative discovery prompts; your company appears 37 times. Raw mention rate: 37%.
Compare that over time and against competitors. The absolute number matters less than the trend and the competitive context.
Metric 2: Citation share
How frequently is your website used or referenced as a source?
This matters because a citation indicates something different from a brand mention — your site may be informationally valuable even when the response doesn't recommend your product.
Microsoft has already formalized citation measurement inside Bing Webmaster Tools, including citation totals, cited URLs and trends. Citation visibility is likely to become a standard part of search reporting.
Metric 3: Prompt coverage
A single overall score can hide important information. You may appear for "what is Orchestra?" but not for "best AI marketing software for small businesses" — and the latter is far more commercially meaningful.
Organize prompts into groups and calculate coverage within each:
- Category — best CRM platforms
- Problem — how do I automate sales follow-up?
- Comparison — best alternatives to Product X
- Audience — best marketing software for hotels
- Transactional — which platform should I use to manage my marketing?
Metric 4: Competitive visibility
AI discovery rarely occurs in isolation — customers compare alternatives. Track your mentions against competitor mentions.
If your business appears in 20% of prompts while Competitor A appears in 60% and Competitor B in 45%, you have a benchmark and a question: which information environment causes that competitor to appear more consistently?
The answer usually leads somewhere concrete — content strategy, positioning, product messaging, PR, authority building or SEO work. Why AI recommends your competitors works through the common causes.
Metric 5: Topic authority
Less about one prompt, more about the broader question: which subjects does AI associate with your brand?
Imagine a platform with strong visibility for social media automation, medium for AI marketing, weak for SEO and very weak for GEO. That's strategic information — the marketing team now knows exactly where the digital footprint needs strengthening.
Supporting metric: AI referral traffic
Track sessions from AI systems where identifiable. For ChatGPT, OpenAI's publisher

But traffic should sit under visibility metrics rather than replace them — a user can see your brand without clicking. How to track ChatGPT traffic covers the analytics side.
Supporting metric: Google generative AI impressions
Google's generative AI performance reports in Search Console provide impression data for AI Search experiences where the reporting has rolled out — another valuable measurement source, though it reports impressions rather than clicks.
Supporting metric: conversions
Ultimately: does AI visibility contribute to business results? Track leads, subscriptions, bookings, revenue and assisted conversions.
Visibility without commercial impact may still have branding value, but businesses eventually need to connect marketing activity to outcomes.
The Orchestra AI visibility framework
- Mention share — are you being named?
- Citation share — is your information being referenced?
- Prompt coverage — which questions do you appear for?
- Competitive visibility — who appears instead of you?
- Topic authority — what does AI associate your brand with?
Then connect those to traffic → engagement → conversion.
Why one score isn't enough
A GEO Score is useful as a dashboard-level indicator, but it shouldn't hide what's underneath.
Imagine two businesses that both score 50. Business A is frequently mentioned but rarely cited. Business B is often cited but rarely recommended. Same headline score, very different problems — and very different fixes.
That's why Orchestra GEO pairs a simplified visibility score with the underlying diagnostic information.
AI visibility measurement is still evolving
There is no single industry-standard GEO metric, and that's normal — SEO analytics developed over decades, while AI search measurement is at a much earlier stage.
But the direction is already visible. Google is exposing generative AI impressions. Microsoft is exposing citations and grounding queries. OpenAI is enabling referral tracking from ChatGPT search. Businesses should start building their measurement framework now.
The question has changed
Twenty years ago it was "are we on Google?" Then it became "where do we rank?" Now we also need to ask: when customers ask AI about our market, how much of the answer belongs to us?
That is the emerging discipline of AI visibility measurement.
